Chapter 19

“Wake the fuck up!” Ricki’s angry voice ripped me from a dreamless sleep. I gasped out in pain as he repeatedly kicked me, but I refused to give him the satisfaction of full-blown screams. I was still tied up in an awkward position so my muscles cried out in agony as I tried to wriggle away from the torment of Ricki’s boots. Finally he stopped. I squeezed my eyes shut afraid of what was coming next. “Clean her up and bring her to me when you’re done,” he commanded to some unknown person. Ricki’s loud footsteps echoed through the empty room before the door slammed shut behind him.

“Come on. You don’t want to upset him more.” A soft female voice stated.

I opened my eyes to see a tiny brunette with a short, pixie haircut and a black eye, reaching for me. Of all the options that had flown through my head, I definitely hadn’t expected someone like her to be who Ricki was talking to. I immediately began peppering her with questions. I just couldn’t help myself. She might turn out to be the only source of any real answers any time soon. “Who are you? Why are you here? Who else is here? Do you know what Ricki’s plans for me are?”

She brought a finger to my lips and pushed down softly. “Shhh…they’ll hear.” She began untying me. “I’m Richelle.”

As soon as the ropes fell away from me I tried to sit up but ended up flopping over like a fish out of water. Apparently my limbs were all partially asleep. Richelle gently rubbed them to help get my feeling back quickly. “As soon as you can walk I’ll help you bathe and get changed.”

I stared up into her hazel eyes with determination. “You need to give me some answers.”

She looked around nervously as if she expected someone to come flying in the door to punish me or her, or both of us. “Please, I can’t talk to you about such things.”

“Then just leave me here for Ricki to do whatever he wants with me. I’d rather die a quick death than to be tortured or who knows what else.” I really didn’t want to contemplate all the possibilities again.

Richelle shook her head. “No, no, no—they’ll punish me. Please,“ she hissed. “I don’t want to be punished again.”

The look of pure terror that settled into her almost elfin features immediately caused guilt to spring up within me. I could cut my nose off to spite my face any day, but I couldn’t stand the thought of someone suffering because of me, especially when I could prevent it. “Fine,” I grated. “But you better learn some sign language or something because I’m getting some answers from you.”

Relief played across her face. “Thank you,” she whispered. “And I’ll try to tell you…some things.”

Yeah, I already knew what kind of things I was going to hear about…things of no consequence. Great. “Thanks,” I said anyways.

With Richelle’s help, despite her tiny frame, I lumbered to my feet and followed her to the door.
